Viagra has been linked with a large amount of cases of heart attacks and strokes, and the NHS will be helping to cover it.
But experts have warned it’s the latest round of drug attacks that are being investigated by the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.
The drug industry has already been hit by a series of drugs that can also damage the heart and blood vessels. Viagra, which has been prescribed for people with heart problems, was discovered by accident in 2002 after a group of men suffered a heart attack. These men suffered an erection on one side of the penis, while a blood vessel in their legs was blocked by a valve.
The medicine also contained a medicine called sildenafil, which is a drug similar to a blood thinner called warfarin.
The medicine was then found to be in an ‘overactive’ state, meaning it had not been injected properly.
In a separate incident, the erectile dysfunction drug Avicii was found to be in an ‘overactive’ state, meaning it had not been injected properly.
Avicii’s active ingredient is sildenafil.
It is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Sildenafil is a drug used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs) and is also available to treat erectile dysfunction.
In February, a drug in the class of antihypertensive medicines, Valsartan and Angiotensin-Converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, was found to be in an ‘overactive’ state.

There are also more than 20,000 reports of heart attacks and strokes and some people may also be at risk of heart problems.
A spokesman for the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said: ‘The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency has been working with NHS and local bodies to investigate and monitor these cases.
‘We have worked with the local NHS to review and assess these cases and will take action as soon as possible to ensure the safety and well-being of the patients.’
It is hoped that this is part of the ongoing investigation into the drugs.
The MHRA says: ‘Medicines are often used in the treatment of conditions that can be difficult to manage, including heart failure and high blood pressure.
‘In many cases, blood pressure is already high enough to cause a heart attack or stroke.
‘These drugs can also increase the risk of serious heart complications, including stroke and heart failure.
‘We have also investigated the potential links between heart attacks and drugs such as Viagra and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.
‘We believe the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency is working closely with local authorities in the UK to ensure that these drugs are appropriately used and safe.
‘We hope that this will help to stop the more than 20,000 cases of heart attacks and strokes in the UK.
‘A number of cases have been reported in England and Wales, with more than 50,000 cases.
